Message from the Chair

Dear Members

How strange! It’s time to wish you all a very warm Christmas and
happy New Year. It may not be the Christmas we are used to – or
want – but I do hope you are able to spend time with at least some
family members. And surely the new year will bring us better times? At
least there is the hint of a vaccine to give a hope. We may be meeting in
person before this time next year! Any way I will raise my glass to you all
and wish you all the very best.
This year has certainly not been kind to our tree planting plans! At the
moment we hope to hold this event over the three days 7th, 8th and 9th
December. We still don’t know if we will be able to as we are not being
told if lock down will continue until 2nd December. If it continues then we
shall have to delay until January and I will be in touch again with all who
have offered to help. There is also the risk of flooding in the park to delay
things! I will be keeping my fingers – and everything else – very firmly
crossed. Meanwhile the trees themselves have arrived and are currently
resting in trenches in a friend’s garden.
Now I need to get quite serious. As you may be aware, next year quite a
lot of the committee come to the end of our terms of office. The most
serious post we desperately need to fill is that of secretary. This could be
taken on by a team if that encourages people to come forward. We only
meet 6 times a year (currently on Zoom) and the secretary needs to
gather together the paper work, prepare the agenda and take the minutes.
Jane Lloyd, our current secretary, is more than happy to initiate any
interested people into how she does it. She will be happy to work
alongside and offer support. Surely, out of a membership of 1200, there
must be someone able and willing to take on this role? We are a lovely
bunch of people and enjoy each others’ company. This role is essential
for our U3A to function. Please, please think really carefully about
whether you could help for 3 years. We are a self-help organisation that is
run by and for our members. We all have a part to play. But without a
secretary we will be unable to continue.
Many thanks to you all. It isn’t my style to beg, plead or cajole so forgive
me.

The Poetry Writing Group – Our 2020 Anthology

It was the writer L.P. Hartley who once said “the past is another country – they do things differently there” and I think that many of us will have seen the truth of this when we think back to the beginning of the year which now seems truly a foreign land.  It was then that the Journal reminded us that 2020 marked the 20th Anniversary of Tonbridge U3A and we looked forward to discussing at our regular meetings what our contribution might be, blissfully unaware of the life-changing forces gathering strength on distant shores.

Latest news from Travel Team

When we eventually get back to some form of normality we will do our best to get some outings booked. Those that had to be cancelled will be discussed by the Travel Team at our first meeting. Next year’s programme will be liable to change, so read the Journal to keep up with any new plans that appear.
