Travel Team

Interest Group Information:

Plans, researches and leads outings for all members. Visits cover a wide range of venues. A day’s outing arranged each month. The team organises an annual six to seven night holiday alternating between the UK and Europe.

We have a very large membership of about 1,300 people and often feel that the work involved in planning and organising outings is not worth all our efforts when only a handful of applications appear.  Many of our members do not visit the website which also takes a lot time and effort to keep up to date, and this also applies to the notice board at the monthly meetings; so please make a New Year resolution to support the Team by visiting the website and contributing to its pictures and written content, by looking at the notice board and by remembering to support the outings and breaks that are organised for our U3A.  One of our members sent us a group of haikus that they had composed about the Isle of Wight holiday and another wrote pieces for the website, so do read them.  Thank you to those who took the trouble to contribute to the website.

A team of nine members plan, research and lead outings which are open to all paid-up members of Tonbridge U3A.  Visits cover a wide range of venues in congenial company.  Outings are planned for one day each month with at least one holiday each year.  Costs are kept at a reasonable level covering travel, venue, guides, when used, driver’s gratuity and admin costs and are based on a minimum number going; a full coach can mean a refund (on the majority of outings).  A combined information sheet and application form accompanies the monthly newsletter, usually the month before the outing takes place.  The places are drawn after the last day of application. Please give plenty of notice if unable to come.

Dear Members
I do hope that members are looking at the Northern Ireland photos as it takes a lot of time and effort for Geoff to put them up on our website. It is also fun to look at previous holidays etc. There is also the latest information on the outings and application forms available on

The airflow system on the coaches that we are hiring have been modified to draw down air vertically above each seat and vent it out at floor level, therefore providing a constant flow of fresh air to each person.

In November we are having an outing to see the illuminations at Leonardslee Gardens. The application form, with all the details of the evening, is in the present Journal. Do please read them and come and join us for a festive evening and start getting in the mood for the Christmas season.

Next year we will be having our holiday in the UK and will be going to South West Wales. It was difficult to get a hotel for a large number of people as they are already heavily booked for the season. We will be going the last week in April for 8 days and 7 nights on a half board basis. The application form is also
in this month’s Journal and you will have until early October to book. More details on the form. We will use our local coach company for the holiday.

A lot of time and effort goes into organising these outings and
holidays so we do appreciate your support

Exploring South West Wales – Saturday 23 April to Saturday 30 April 2022

the Pembrokeshire Coast, Cardiff (the Senedd and Bay, Cardiff Castle, then Glyndwr Vineyard), Aberdulais Falls, Cefn Coed mining museum and Blaenant Colliery, travel on the Brecon Mountain Railway and visit Brecon.

There will be free time at various venues where you will be able to look at the places and things that interest you. We have tried to choose a varied and interesting programme that we hope will appeal to many of you.

The holiday costs £849 with a single room supplement of £139. There are a limited number of single rooms and we suggest that you share with a friend to avoid being disappointed. You should also be aware that entry to some venues is not included and we suggest that if you are not currently a member of the National Trust you may wish to consider joining. (U3A members can bring a friend who is not a U3A member to accompany them and share a room. A non-member cannot have a single room).
