This group looks at authors who have lived or worked in this area, with a focus on Kent. We discuss a text and author each month. We also make one or two visits to places of interest.
We meet on the 4th Monday afternoon.
Current Situation
This group has managed to hold several monthly meetings during lockdown on Zoom, which enabled us to continue with our programme. In April, we held a discussion on Virginia Woolf’s ‘Mrs Dalloway’ and in May and in June, our meetings were both on Dickens’ ‘Great Expectations’. For these, we have had 7 or 8 participants on Zoom, (which we felt was the right number, not being too many.) We planned it well in advance, with specific contributions from members, and the resulting discussion was quite focused and detailed, extending over several consecutive short Zoom sessions, – so being the length of a ‘normal’ meeting. As one participant commented, it was a relief to focus on something other than the ‘covid day-to-day’. The Zoom meetings were felt to be successful, and an achievement for us, but we still do prefer having meetings face-to-face!
