Books That Made Britain

This is a new one-year course based on the literary series of the same name shown on BBC4 last summer. It is basically a regional review of writings from around England (rather than Britain) – Lake District to Cornwall. It takes in all types of fiction, children’s books, crime, historical, literary and even chic-lit and the angry young men of the 1950s. No preparation or pre-reading will be required by members. It will be a relaxed group where we watch the recorded programmes and then reminisce and discuss books we read when young. However, it is hoped that it will also stimulate us to try books that we missed the first time around. We will meet in Tonbridge on the second Tuesday morning. There will be eight sessions, four from Sept. to December, and four from January to April. There will then be a break over the summer. Numbers will be limited so that all can see the TV.
