With the easing of restrictions and beautiful sunshine we met in Julie’s beautiful garden for the first time since last September. On the menu were two Malbecs from South America and two Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand.
The first Malbec from Chile had a blue fruit sweetness with hints of ripe dark
fruits; elements of spicy black pepper and smooth tannins. The second, was a
high – altitude Malbec from the Argentine Andes, with a lovely plush texture. Both wines would complement grilled steaks and casseroles.
The Wairau Valley provided our first bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and with a bouquet of lemon, currant and fresh herbs it would pair well with creamy fish dishes and salmon en croute. Our second, was a classic zingy Sauvignon and very drinkable as an aperitif on a sunny day, featuring hints of citrus fruits, passion fruit and melon. The wines were accompanied by artisan breads and delicious cheeses.

Despite Lockdown, our group of dedicated oenophiles were not to be
deterred from seeking out fine wines; thanks to technology we continued
to have our monthly meetings via Zoom.
Members each chose a wine to sample and describe. Omitting the odd
G&T, the wines have covered a broad range from opulent Argentinian
Malbec, jam-packed with fruit flavours, excellent with strong cheeses and
roasted beef, to lighter wines. A Rose from the Terre du Midi was
recommended as an aperitif perfect to share with friends on a sunny,
warm afternoon. Chilean whites also featured and a lively, fresh, tropical
Sauvignon Blanc would go well with fish dishes and salads in the summer
months.
We have all received our first jabs and weather permitting hope to meet
outside in two small groups before much longer.
