Subject: Text – information from Kent Police.

“Fraudsters are trying to trick people in Kent into buying high value jewellery or withdrawing and handing over large sums of money. Don’t be fooled.

This is how they do it:

  1. A fraudster calls, pretending to be from the police. They claim your bank account has been hacked and transactions have been made, or that your bank is being investigated for fraud.
  1. They tell you either to go to a jewellers and buy high value items such as watches or to visit your bank’s local branch and withdraw as much money as you can. They tell you to say your withdrawal is to buy a new car or to pay for building work if the bank clerk asks you any questions. This prevents the bank clerk from challenging your actions.
  1. The fraudster contacts you again to arrange for the money to be collected by a courier, which they say will help with their investigation. Once your money is handed over you will never see it again.

OR

They tell you to hang up and call the police or bank to ensure the call is genuine. They stay on the line so when you redial you think you are through to the police or your bank, but you’re not. Then they tell you to withdraw a sum of money from your bank and keep it at home.

  1. They then send a taxi or courier round to collect the money, or a person pretending to be an officer wearing plain clothes.

Remember:

The police will never ask you to withdraw and hand over your money to help with an investigation. Never hand your cash or jewellery over.

If you think you have been a victim of this type of crime visit your local police station as a matter of priority or  call us on 101. If the incident is in progress, dial 999. Make any call to us on a different phone to the one the offenders have called you on.”
